I've heard of AirMessage users running their server on 2007 Mac Minis lol. Actually, even very old Macs can be upgraded to newer, officially "unsupported" OS versions. Since there are many potential users who lose interest in AirMessage when they see the "Mac" requirement, I'm also trying to raise awareness of the ability to use relatively inexpensive old Mac devices. Just want to get an idea of what Mac devices (or VMs/Hackintoshes) and macOS the AirMessage community is using for the server.
